MEASURING INSTRUMENTS

MICROMETER

A micrometer, often referred to as an outside micrometer, is a precision measuring instrument used to measure dimensions with high accuracy. It consists of a C-shaped frame, an anvil, and a spindle with a calibrated screw mechanism. When the thimble on the end of the spindle is rotated, the spindle moves relative to the anvil, allowing the measurement of the distance between them. Micrometers are commonly used in manufacturing, engineering, and machining applications to measure the diameter or thickness of objects to a high degree of precision, typically to within thousandths of an inch or hundredths of a millimeter.
